To measure the performance of different PC (x86) systems I have used several very simple and widely known tools, like the Core Test 2.7, the LandMark 2.0, the 3D Bench, the WinTach 1.2 and the WindSock 3.30. I have also used application programs like Quake v1.06 to test the FPU-3D performance (very important for gamers), the Xing MPEG Player v3.2, and the L3 Encoder v2.71 with a test file for the case you are interested in MP3 audio.

Before we go into details let's have a look at the things that are actually measured by the previous tools.

Core Test 2.7: Measures the AVARAGE SEEK TIME and the DATA TRANSFER RATE between your HDD CONTROLLER and the system bus. In other words, the so called "Sustained Data Transfer Speed" (wich is very important in multimedia applications) is NOT measured.

LandMark 2.0 CPU test: INTEGER and MEMORY performance of the processor.
LandMark 2.0 FPU test: FPU performance of the processor. IMPORTANT NOTICE: because of an unknown reason, the FPU score of the shareware and the registered version of LM 2.0 are different. Also, if you run the program in the root, or in a sub-directory, the FPU score will be different. The presented measurements were performed by using the registered LM 2.0 in the "C:\PC-TESTS\LM20" sub-directory. You can read more about FPU score deviations here.
LandMark 2.0 VID test: DATA TRANSFER SPEED between the CPU and the sVGA card through the system bus (ISA, EISA, VESA, PCI, AGP).

3D Bench: This test uses the CPU, the MEMORY and the VIDEO subsystem at the same time. It can be regarded as the direct measure of the performance of old-style DOS-based games (320x200, 320x240, 8bit). The result is given in fps (frame per second).

Quake v1.06 test: This is a REAL 3D game, one of the most populars. It is very FPU dependent, like many other modern 3D games. The test have to be performed in VESA VBE 2.0 640x480 resolution, full screen, without CD audio (start Quake with the parameter "-nocdaudio"). To perform the benchmark, in the console type "timedemo demo2", than press the consol button " ` " (next to the "!" key in the upper left corner of your keyboard) immediately. The result is given in fps.

WinTach 1.2: (for Windows) It provides "fps-like" numbers (normalized to a 386DX-20, STD VGA system) for typical Windows applications like "Word Processing", "CAD / Draw", "Spreadsheet", "Paint" and "Overall WinTach RPM". The drawback of the test is the complete missing of DISK testing, which would be very important in respect of general Windows performance.

WindSock 3.30: (for Windows) It is not an application-based test program, but has the advantage over WinTach to test the Disk and Memory subsystems too.

Xing MPEG Player v2.2: MPEG-1 Video playback performance depends on the CPU / FPU speed, on the VDEO data transfer speed, the scaling capability of the sVGA card, and even on the HDD/CD speed. At least 30 fps is required for good quality video playback. For the benchmark run Settings/Diagnostics/Video_Performance/(1x or Full_Screen)/Run_Test.

L3 Encoder v2.71: MP3 Audio Encoding is very FPU dependent similarly to Quake. Because of the program already uses the FPU registers, MMX support is irrelevant. In order to run the test, previously you have to dowbload a 6.5s long, 2x16bit/44.1kHz test file. In the Volkov Commander's own menu (F2) you will find the benchmark option (F10). In order to much faster download, here I provide the MP3 only version of the test file too. Don't forget, that before you can run the test, you have to decode the test file to obtain the "original" TEST.WAV!
