Welsh actor finds that Dawn is a bundle of laughs

Nov 12 2002

Hannah Jones, The Western Mail

WELSH heart-throb Richard Mylan has swapped Catherine Zeta Jones for Dawn French - but he's not complaining.

The 29-year-old actor admits Dawn in keeping him in stitches as the pair currently starring in BBC sitcom Wild West.

But Richard has also appeared with Hollywood star Catherine Zeta Jones as a schoolboy in a Welsh teenage production of Oliver!

Swansea-born Richard said, "Well Dawn and Catherine are very different - but I'm not saying which I prefer.

"But Dawn does make you laugh all the time, it's just as well as we're filming a comedy."

Wild West - set in Cornwall and Devon - follows the fortunes of a mixed bag of off-the-wall characters in the latest episode tonight.

The show is written by Men Behaving Badly creator Simon Nye.

Richard plays bearded local Harry who Dawn French's lesbian character Mary tries to match-make for.

"In this Tuesday's episode Mary tries to get me together with another character called Holly," said Richard. "But it's just so she can watch us making love!

"It is quite a bizarre programme, but I'm a proud of it. We're trying to show you can't stereotype people from the South West as bumpkins - something I feel I can relate to, being Welsh."

Richard was just 10 years old when he was in an amateur operatic show with Catherine Zeta Jones.

And Richard confessed, "I followed her around like a love-sick puppy - but to her I was just another kid."

"Even then everyone could tell Catherine was a bit special. She could do everything - sing, dance, speak well, look absolutely beau-tiful."

Before Wild West Richard had a major role in the made-in-Wales production of Belonging alongside former Coronation Street star Charles Dale and renowned actress Gwen Taylor as a married chef with a colourful sex life.

Richard has also appeared in a string of top dramas, including The Bill.

Handsome Richard left his home in Swansea at the age of 12 to study dance at the Urdang Academy in Covent Garden, London.

But when his dancing career failed to take off he turned to acting and has not looked back since.

He lives with his girlfriend in Grangetown, Cardiff, but is currently enjoying a short holiday in south-west of England.
