Catherine Zeta-Jones trades handbag for baby on the red carpet

Catherine Zeta-Jones trades handbag for baby on the red carpet

LOS ANGELES March 12 - Movie star Catherine Zeta-Jones, who is eight-months pregnant, says carrying a baby will make her forget her anxieties when she sashays up the red carpet at this year's Oscars.

The Welsh-born beauty said she used to have panic attacks before she stepped out of her limousine at the end of the red carpet at film premieres and the Oscars, but that pregnancy has cured her jitters.

``I usually get all whipped up going down the red carpet, although you may not believe it. I just about have a nervous breakdown just before I step out there.

``(But) now I have something else to think about instead of `Oh my gosh, I hope I don't trip, I hope I don't say the wrong thing, I hope my dress doesn't break,'' she told reporters at a lunch for Oscar nominees this week.

``All those things have gone away now. I'm just, like, carrying ... something else, not just a handbag,'' she quipped at the Beverly Hills do.

Zeta-Jones, the 33-year-old wife of movie hero Michael Douglas, is nominated for an Academy Award as best supporting actress for her role as murderous diva Velma Kelly in the musical hit ``Chicago.''

She is now the favourite in the category after taking home the prestigious Screen Actors Guild (SAG) award on Sunday, an honour that is seen as a key predictor of an actor's Oscars success.

But Zeta-Jones said that even if she misses out on Hollywood's highest honours when they are awarded in less than two weeks, she is thrilled to have made the film that is being hailed as a revival of the film musical genre.

``I needed to do this film, even if not one person saw it, of people threw tomatoes as us,'' she said adding that working with director Rob Marshall and the all-star cast was ``one of the best experiences of my life.''

Reacting to reports that an ambulance was on standby outside Sunday's SAG awards in case Zeta-Jones went into labour, she didn't think she would have a natal emergency during Tinseltown's biggest night of the year.

``I'm due a few weeks afterwards so I think I'll be alright. There's no waters breaking,'' she said.

The 2003 Oscars will be presented to winners in 24 categories on March 23 at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood. - AFP
