The actor - who is 25 years older than her - has launched an unprovoked attack on her former boyfriends, branding them 'idiots'.
Talking about their initial courtship, the 58-year-old Hollywood star said: 'I found out she had strong family ties and had her share of knocks as far as relationships were concerned - she'd been with her fair share of idiots.'
Unfortunately, Douglas did not elaborate on exactly which of Miss Zeta- Jones's exboyfriends he was referring to. But there are a number of possible contenders.
The 33-year-old Welsh actress
dated shamed television presenter John Leslie for two years from 1991.
She was starring in The Darling Buds of May and he was a Blue Peter host - but they split when she pushed him to have a family.
Leslie, 37, has since said: 'I don't think I had been in love before I met Catherine and I haven't really been in love since we split. We'll always be mates.'
Miss Zeta- Jones then embarked on a romance with Soldier, Soldier star Angus McFadyen, 34, but they ended their two-year relationship shortly after getting engaged.
Before they went their separate ways, the actress gushed: 'I'm so happy with Angus. I think this time I've found the love of my life.'
Shortly afterwards, a minor scandal erupted when the actress was seen in a passionate embrace with Paul McGann, her married co-star in the television mini- series Catherine The Great.
The 42-year-old actor denied an affair and remained with his family.
And then there was legendary womaniser Mick Hucknall, lead singer of Simply Red.
The flame-haired star, whose fortune is estimated at £ 30million, wooed Miss Zeta- Jones shortly after she moved to Holsayinglywood four years ago in an attempt to break into movies.
But after four months she ended the affair as her new life became all-consuming.
Miss Zeta- Jones ' s final conquest before she married Douglas was multi-millionaire Hollywood producer Jon Peters, 56, a former lover of Barbra Streisand.
But she declined his proposal, 'It wouldn't be sensible to marry him. There are plenty more big fish in the sea.'
Douglas also revealed he had no problem taking a back seat while his wife's career goes from strength to strength.
Referring to her recent Oscar win for best supporting actress in Chicago - and the considerable age gap between them - the actor said: 'I don't mind being Mr Mum.
'As long as you have something with the woman you love, age is really not what it's about.
'I recognise that my wife is 25 years younger, in the prime of her career. I'm happy to give her as much space and time as she needs for that.'
Meanwhile, the couple - currently suing Hello! magazine for publishing unauthorised photographs of their 2000 wedding - have been voted the celebrities who most deserve their comeuppance.
They polled a quarter of the votes in the survey for PlayStation 2 game Vexx.
