Dream movie double act for Zeta Jones and Douglas falls through

Jul 17 2003

Claire Hill, The Western Mail

OSCAR winner Catherine Zeta Jones and her husband Michael Douglas's plans to star in another film together have collapsed.

The couple, who yesterday were back in the headlines with the second half of the High Court case against Hello! magazine, will not be starring in the thriller Monkeyface.

Director Stephen Frears said the deal to get the couple on board did not work.

Speaking at the launch of his film Dirty Pretty Things in America he admitted, "It collapsed on Friday. They couldn't do a deal.

"Whatever the deal was to get Catherine Zeta Jones and Michael Douglas, they couldn't get it to work. Everybody wanted to make it but somehow they couldn't lock it into place."

Though the couple had starred together in Steven Soderbergh's Traffic, this would have been the first time they had actually shared scenes together.

Michael Douglas has admitted on his official website that he would love to do another film with his Swansea-born wife.

However, now the couple will have to look for another project.

The pair, who have recently had a second child, Carys, were due to start filming later this year, playing hustlers in a racetrack heist in Miami.

There has been no official comment from the star's management, but earlier this year Catherine had announced she was looking forward to the film.

She had said, "We are going to be doing a movie together hopefully at the end of the year with our Brit friend Stephen Frears."

Catherine, who had worked with Frears in High Fidelity will be next seen alongside George Clooney in Coen Brothers' film Intolerable Cruelty.
