Magazine Laments Zeta-Jones Photos Flap

LONDON - The former editor of OK! magazine says sales of its issue covering the wedding of Catherine Zeta-Jones (news) and Michael Douglas (news) fell well short of expectations after rival Hello! magazine printed unauthorized photos of the nuptials.

Martin Townsend compared the wedding with that of British celebrity couple David and Victoria Beckham (news) Thursday at a hearing in High Court to decide the damages to be awarded to OK! and the Hollywood couple.

Justice John Lindsay ruled in April that Hello! breached the couple's commercial confidence by printing photos of their $2 million wedding at New York's Plaza Hotel in November 2000.

Zeta-Jones and Douglas are seeking $800,000 from Hello!, while OK! publisher, Northern & Shell PLC, has asked for $2.75 million.

Townsend said OK! paid each couple $1.62 million for exclusive coverage of their weddings. The July 1999 issue covering the Beckhams' wedding quadrupled sales to about 1,500,000 copies, and the magazine had expected sales exceeding that number for the Zeta-Jones and Douglas wedding, Townsend said. Instead, that edition sold 836,000 copies.

"This was a huge story. It was substantially bigger than the Beckhams' wedding," Townsend said.
