Pitt Separating from 'Smith' Family
By Chris Gardner
LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) -
Divorce papers are close
to being signed for "Mr. and Mrs. Smith," a thriller that was
set to star Nicole Kidman (news) and Brad Pitt (news).
After losing Kidman a month ago because of scheduling
conflicts, Mr. Smith -- aka Pitt -- is close to leaving the
Regency Enterprises project as well, also because of scheduling
conflicts, his reps confirmed.
The actor is in Mexico filming Warner Bros. Pictures'
"Troy" until next month. He would have then done "Smith" before
segueing to "Ocean's Twelve" for director Steven Soderbergh (news) and
Warners in February, but none of the actresses he had approved
for "Smith" -- including Kidman, Catherine Zeta-Jones (news) and
Angelina Jolie (news) -- was available at the right time.
Sources said "Smith" hasn't hit the end of the road, with
other names being bandied about to replace Pitt, including Will Smith (news) and Johnny Depp (news).
The project, which Doug Liman ("The Bourne Identity") is
attached to direct, centers on a bored married couple who
discover that they are enemy assassins hired to kill each
other. Regency declined comment Tuesday.
