Angelina Is Brad's "Mrs."

The whole Brad Pitt-Nicole Kidman thing didn't work out. Now he's ready to tie the knot with Angelina Jolie.

Before you start grieving for Jennifer Aniston, know this: The Pitt-Jolie union is purely cinematic--they'll be playing marrieds in the upcoming thriller Mr. and Mrs. Smith.

Not to be confused with Alfred Hitchcock's similarly titled 1941 comedy, the Pitt-Jolie project is about a couple stuck in a dead-end marriage. The catch is that unbeknownst to the other, each spouse is a covert assassin, and their next mission is kill each other.

Originally conceived as a starring vehicle for Pitt and Kidman, the film came close to going belly up earlier this year when Kidman pulled out, citing a scheduling snafu. (She had already committed to The Stepford Wives remake and couldn't get her calendar to jibe with Pitt's, himself busy with Wolfgang Petersen's Troy.)

With Kidman out, Pitt came close to bailing two weeks ago, and producers were already scrambling for last-minute replacements--Cate Blanchett or Catherine Zeta-Jones for Mrs. Smith, Will Smith for, yes, Mr. Smith. But with a November start date fast approaching, Mr. and Mrs. Smith appeared to be left at the altar.

But on Thursday, 20th Century Fox, which is producing the film through its Regency house, confirmed to E! that Jolie had agreed to sub in, and Pitt was back onboard.

According to Daily Variety, the deal took some serious juggling, though, since both actors have very tight schedules.

Pitt is currently shooting Troy for Warner Bros. and is locked in to shoot Steven Soderbergh's Ocean's Twelve, also for Warners, in February. Jolie, currently stinking up the screen in Lara Croft: Tomb Raider--The Cradle of Life, will soon begin work as Alexander the Great's mommy on Oliver Stone's Alexander, which will film in Morocco and London through the fall. She also will be busy promoting the October release of humanitarian-themed Beyond Borders and still has her U.N. goodwill duties to carry out (she's due to pick up the UNCA World Citizenship Award on October 22).

Somehow, the various agents and producers involved worked out a schedule that would accommodate both Pitt and Jolie, that will reportedly include the two actors filming several scenes solo before coming together to finish shooting.

Mr. and Mrs. Smith was written by scribe Simon Kinberg (who assisted on Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle) and will be directed by Doug Liman (The Bourne Identity).
