Zorro For Grown-Ups
Banderas reveals a more mature swashbuckling sequel
01/09/2003

It's been five years since Antonio Banderas sported the mask, hat and cape of Spanish superhero, Zorro. Five years since he flirted outrageously with Catherine Zeta Jones, disrobing her with deft flicks of his rapier while simultaneously catapulting her into the Hollywood A-list. Five years, in fact, of repeated rumours that a sequel would emerge, which have, so far, come to naught.

Zorro Unmasked was originally touted as a 2002 release but, quite clearly, that never happened. The once defunct has recently been revived however and Antonio Banderas has the lowdown straight from Spielberg himself.

'Steven Spielberg came to the theatre [where Banderas is currently starring in Nine] like several weeks ago and said to me "We want to do a different approach to Zorro this time, we want to make more of an adult movie, and we are going to talk about more of the human stuff, there's going to be a big issue with General in the second part, and more of the relationship between you and your wife.' And of course there's going to be stunts and all that stuff but they are going to make the film a little bit deeper than the first one was. I thought that was an interesting approach instead of going for the popcorn straight forward, they wanted to something a little more complex than that."

We're not entirely sure what he's talking about but hey, a more sophisticated masked vigilante with a waxed moustache can only be a good thing.
