No Welsh service for Zeta babies

Sep 11 2003

Robin Turner, The Western Mail

FILM star Catherine Zeta Jones appears to have chosen the USA instead of her native Wales as the venue for her children's christenings.

It had been understood the home-grown Oscar-winning actress and herHollywood star husbandMichael Douglas wouldbe christening three-year-old Dylan and Carys, born earlier this year, in Swansea.

They had planned to book the entire 20-bedroom five-star Morgan's Hotel in the centre of Swansea for star friends such as Goldie Hawn, Danny DeVito, Meg Ryan and producer Steven Spielberg.

But yesterday Catherine's publicist Ce Ce Yorke said there were no longer any plans for a Swansea christening.

It is thought the frailtyof Michael Douglas's movie legend father, 86-year-old Kirk Douglas, could bebehind the change in plans.

It had been thought Clyne Chapel in Mayals, just a short distance from the home of Catherine's parents Pat and Dai, could have been the venue for the christenings.

But it seems more likely now the twin ceremonywill be held either in Los Angeles where the couple have a home, or in the mountains of Colorado where Michael Douglas has a ranch home.

A family friend said yesterday, "Something like this takes a lot of organising.

"And not only do Catherine and Michael have extremely busy schedules but so do most of their friends."

Catherine and Michael Douglas have booked into the plush Morgan's Hotel on two occasions during visits to Wales.

The hotel has 20 themed rooms named after ships which sailed from Swansea, including one called Zeta.

The actress got her middle name from her grandmother Zeta who was named after a copper barque which sailed regularly from Swansea to South America.

The celebrity appeal of the hotel, a converted former port administration building, has certainly rubbed off on hotel examiners.

Morgan's has been named the AA Hotel of the Year in Wales and will feature in the AA's elite top 200 hotels in Britain.

Industry experts say the listing is a major achievement for a venture still in its first year of existence.

Morgan's is the brainchild of millionaire Swansea entrepreneur Martin Morgan and his wife Louisa.

A spokeswoman for Morgan's said it could not comment on the question of the christenings because it had to respect client confidentiality.
