The couple hosted their third adopt-a-landmine gala at the Beverly Hilton Hotel, in Beverly Hills.

Former Beatle McCartney performed with James Taylor in front of an audience that included Michael Douglas and his wife Catherine Zeta-Jones, Barbara Streisand, Eric Clapton and actor Leonard Nimoy.

Yesterday Lady McCartney, who is expecting her baby in two months, spoke of their joy and relief when they discovered she was pregnant after fears she would not be able to conceive following two ectopic pregnancies and cancer of the uterus.

She revealed they know the sex of their baby, but are keeping it secret.

Her revelation on the Larry King TV show that the couple no longer live in the homes Sir Paul shared with his late wife Linda have fuelled speculation of further tension between her and his daughter Stella.

But she told King she was not bothered by her husband's publicly stated declaration of love for his first wife. "It just shows how truly romantic and loving he is," she said. In a statement Sir Paul and Heather said: "The momentum we've seen in such a short time to rid the world of these insidious weapons of war has been extraordinary as well as gratifying.

"Adopt-A-Minefield has become a model for how people can work together to educate and make a difference. Each year, support for AAM grows and, more importantly, awareness of this worldwide crisis grows."

Douglas and Zeta-Jones have recently raised nearly £300,000 to support emergency work in Afghanistan resulting in over 600,000 square meters of land being cleared.

King and fellow chat show host Jay Leno, actor Mickey Rooney and Baywatch star David Hasselhoff were also at the gala.
