LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Quentin Tarantino's ultra-violent homage to kung-fu movies, "Kill Bill -- Vol. 1" left its competition for dead at the North American box office, opening at No. 1 with weekend ticket sales of about $22.2 million, its distributor said on Sunday.

The thriller, which was released by Walt Disney Co.'s Miramax Films, stars Uma Thurman as a vengeful former assassin, who decapitates, scalps and mutilates her way through the Japanese underworld. The second installment of the film is set for U.S. release on Feb. 20. The budget for both films totaled $55 million

The "Kill Bill" bow is easily Tarantino's best. His last two movies, 1997's "Jackie Brown" and 1994's "Pulp Fiction," each opened with about $9.3 million.

Last weekend's champion, the family comedy "The School of Rock," slipped to No. 2 with $15.4 million, while the romantic comedy "Intolerable Cruelty," starring George Clooney and Catherine Zeta-Jones, opened at No. 3 with $13.1 million.

"The School of Rock" was released by Paramount Pictures, a unit of Viacom Inc. . "Intolerable Cruelty" was released by Universal Pictures, a unit of Vivendi Universal SA .

The family movie "Good Boy!" opened at No. 4 with $13 million, followed by the Denzel Washington thriller "Out of Time" with $8.6 million in its second weekend. Both films were released by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Inc .
