Zorro will make his mark again

October 27, 2003

BY CINDY PEARLMAN

For the last few years, Zorro has been getting some ZZZZ's.

But no more, because a sequel starring Antonio Banderas and Catherine Zeta-Jones is slicing its way through the Hollywood system. "The plan is to bring back both Catherine and Antonio," says director Martin Campbell. "All of us have always wanted to do a sequel."

He says the delay has been "getting the script right. We've been through three stories that we didn't like. The bottom line is that I don't think of this as just a sequel. This film has to stand on its own." Campbell says.

Right now, "The new script is about Zorro and the statehood of California. It's about how law enforcement came into play and does that make Zorro redundant?" he says.

As for Zeta-Jones, Campbell says he wants both her and Zorro's dead father Anthony Hopkins back.

"I just saw Catherine and she looks so great. She had two children and in about two seconds was back in shape." And Hopkins? Didn't he die in the first film? "You never know what can happen," Campbell teases.
