New York-based lawyers for Michael Douglas's Academy Award-winning spouse have sent an extraordinary letter to media outlets across the US saying the litigious couple intend to sue "each and every publication" around the world which has linked Zeta Jones's celebrated post-baby weight loss with the popular protein-packed Atkins diet.
The Smoking Gun website yesterday published the letter in which lawyers for the Welsh star assert that "her likeness and persona have been improperly linked" to the diet, adding that the diet "has been derided by nutritionists and other healthcare officials for decades".
By incorrectly reporting that Zeta Jones "uses and/or endorses the Atkins diet", the letter says, publications are "falsely representing to the average reader, including many young women who look up to my client and admire her beautiful appearance, that Ms Zeta Jones would recommend this diet to any person looking to lose weight".
Lawyer John H. Lavely Jr says his firm also intends to pursue claims against news media who disseminate or republish "these injurious falsehoods".
Given the number of cases in which Zeta Jones may be required to give evidence, it could put her movie career on hold for several years.
