Celebrity Chatter: Stars Working Through Summer Vacation

Exotic Locales, Interesting Pairings In Store

POSTED: 10:06 pm EDT June 13, 2004

A glance at some of the new movies being made shows that box-office draws are steeped in names and star power.

Celebrity Chatter Michelle SolomonThe most recent A-list boasts recognizable faces both behind the scenes and in front of the camera.

Not to mention that some of your favorite stars get to travel to some of the most far-reaching locales to shoot films and make some big bucks.

Charlize Theron will take up residence in Berlin when shooting begins on her pic, "Aeon Flux," in mid-July.

Billy Bob Thornton and Kate Beckinsale visit Nova Scotia for the filming of "Fade Out" in June, while "Duece Bigalow: European Gigolo" finds Rob Schneider and Eddie Griffin camping out in Amsterdam in the film produced by Adam Sandler.

Happily married, new parents Paul Bettany and Jennifer Connelly take a break from parenthood and marital bliss to shoot "Brideshead Revisted" in the United Kingdom.

Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher Also calling the U.K. home, at least for a while is Demi Moore who'll spend August there shooting "Half Light." Meanwhile, boyfriend Ashton Kutcher stays in Los Angeles to team up with Bernie Mac for "The Dinner Party."

Don't forget about the remakes. "Bewitched" gets under way with Nicole Kidman, Will Ferrell, Shirley MacLaine, Michael Caine and Kristin Chenoweth in July. "The Honeymooners" gets a jolt of comedy with Cedric the Entertainer and Mike Epps and "Herbie" gets a redo with teen queen of the moment Lindsay Lohan.

Movies we're looking forward to include: "Be Cool," the update to "Get Shorty" with John Travolta, Uma Thurman, Harvey Keitel, "The Rock," Cedric the Entertainer, Danny Devito, Steven Tyler and more. Then there's the female version of "Barbershop" aptly titled "Beauty Shop" with Queen Latifah, Alicia Silverstone, Alfre Woodward, Andie MacDowell, Mena Suvari, Keisha Knight Pulliam and Kevin Bacon.

The Perfect Wife?

Nicole Kidman, Bette Midler and the cast of "Stepford Wives" have been chatting to help promote the movie. The film is a recast of the 1975 classic where husbands implant chips in their wives' brains to create perfect spouses.

When I ask Kidman what it takes to be the perfect wife, she responded, "I'm not sure. Would someone please tell me!"

Kidman said she didn't believe there was anything as a perfect wife or husband, but "that there was definitely a perfect match out there for everyone."

Midler said relationships were difficult, but there were many folks who took the easy way out by "implanting computer chips in their wives' brains and turning them into robots."

But seriously folks.

It took me 20 years to get an interview with the Divine Miss M and we spent five minutes together.

"How was it?" she asked.

"Divine, of course," I replied.

I did get to tell her the story about my "Live At Last" record album that I played continuously when I was 12 years old to the point where my mother wanted to throw it out the window.

The song "You've Got to Have Friends" had a skip in it. When I think of the song even today, it sounds like Bette's got a case of the hiccups: "You've got to have…You've got to have&#8230"

Catherine's Gift To Grandma

Catherine Zeta Jones is making the rounds with her new co-star Tom Hanks in "The Terminal" and it's allowing for the press to get personal with the star.

The mega-million-dollar actress paid for Zeta Jones', 86, knee replacement surgery. A Welsh newspaper said the knees were purchased as a Christmas gift.

"Catherine's a very generous girl, always helping people," the elder Catherine Zeta Jones told an Irish newspaper.

Zeta Jones, the actress who is married to Michael Douglas, is also dismissing rumors that she is older than she claims to be.

"If people think I look old, there's nothing I can do about it. I turn 35 this year."

Speaking of knees, People magazine is reporting that Britney Spears had to have arthroscopic knee surgery Wednesday after she was hurt during a video shoot.

Spears was filming the video for her single, "Outrageous," which features rap star Snoop Dog when she "took a wrong step and blew out her knee," according to the report.

And pretty soon, not only will Britney wannabes be able to dress like the star, but they can smell like her, too.

An announcement by Elizabeth Arden said that Spears and the beauty company have signed an agreement to develop a line of fragrance, skincare, and cosmetic products.

"I love perfume and cosmetics and am so excited to develop my own line with Elizabeth Arden," said the 22-year-old star.

A fragrance, bearing the name "Curious," will debut in department stores this fall.

"We are delighted to be working with Britney Spears," said Paul West, president of Elizabeth Arden. "She is a talented, fashionable woman who appeals to a young and international consumer base."

Zeta Jones was signed in 2002 to promote Elizabeth Arden's Red Door products and as a way to attract a younger fan base, but Spears' should bring an even younger crowd to Arden's door.

Baby Names, Hollywood Style

Are stars in a contest to find the oddest names for their kids? Courtney Cox and husband David Arquette have reportedly named their daughter, Coco. The baby was born Sunday morning.

That follows on the heels of the oddball name Apple given to the baby daughter of Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin.
