THE brother-in-law of Oscar winning actress Catherine Zeta Jones has been found dead in a New York apartment.
Police refused to say how stand up comedian Eric Douglas, 46, died, but it is believed that drugs were involved.
The half-brother to actor Michael Douglas and youngest son of screen icon Kirk had a long history of drink and drug addiction, spending time in rehabilitation clinics.
The Douglas family was "very shocked and saddened" after learning of the death, family spokesman Allen Burry said.
Eric Douglas had a short-lived acting career in the 1980s and early 1990s, playing supporting roles in movies such as Delta Force 3: The Killing Game.
He then moved on to try his hand at comedy, but struggled to match the success of his famous brother and sister-in-law.
He admitted he was envious of him for marrying the "sweet, charming, considerate" Miss Zeta Jones.
More recently, Mr Douglas attracted attention for his drug and alcohol problems.
In 1997 he pleaded guilty to possessing cocaine. In 1996, Eric Douglas spent a month in jail after being "loud and verbally abusive" on a flight from Los Angeles to Newark, New Jersey, where he allowed his dog to roam free.
Michael Sands, a friend of Eric Douglas, said Douglas had made repeated attempts to get sober.
He said: "In the end, he must've been in a lot of pain", Sands said.
"He didn't know when to stop."
