July 9, 2004 --

LOS ANGELES More than 80 of Eric Douglas' family and close friends paid final respects to the troubled actor yesterday before laying him to rest in a celebrity-laden West L.A. cemetery.

The 46-year-old son of screen legend Kirk Douglas and half-brother of Hollywood superstar Michael Douglas will spend eternity at Pierce Brothers Westwood Villa Memorial Park and Mortuary.

Eric Douglas' brother Peter Douglas, half-brothers Kirk and Joel Douglas and Kirk Douglas' son Cameron Douglas were among six pallbearers who carried the flower-covered casket from the park chapel to the burial site.

The brothers, Michael Douglas' wife Catherine Zeta-Jones and Kirk Douglas then took shovels and solemnly heaped dirt on the coffin, symbolically burying their troubled kin.

A frail-looking Kirk Douglas, accompanied by wife Anne Douglas, needed help walking at the burial ceremony and again required assistance to board his limo home.

"They're going to be all right obviously it's difficult for them right now," family friend and spokesman Allen Burry said after yesterday's funeral.

Several of Kirk Douglas' old-time Hollywood pals including actor Louis Jordan and game show host Monte Hall also attended the funeral.

New York cops found Eric Douglas, 46, dead inside a Manhattan apartment on Tuesday. The death is still under investigation, but no foul play was immediately suspected.

Eric Douglas, who could never emerge from the larger-than-life shadows of his brother and father, fought drugs and alcohol for years.
