DOUGLAS FAREWELL

Jul 9 2004

By Anthony Harwood

GRIEVING Michael Douglas and his wife Catherine Zeta-Jones look solemn yesterday as they arrive at the funeral of the actor's younger brother.

Their father, Hollywood legend Kirk, 86, wept as he stood beside his 46-year-old son Eric's grave.

Michael, 59, helped carry the coffin of his brother who had fought a lifelong battle with drugs and alcohol.

He comforted his frail father with an embrace after they laid to rest the troubled actor and comedian.

The Douglas family spent 30 minutes at the graveside saying their farewells.

Catherine had arrived for the funeral in Los Angeles from Italy, where she is filming Ocean's Twelve with Brad Pitt and George Clooney.

The Douglas family said in a statement that they were "very shocked and saddened" by Eric's death.

He was found by his housekeeper in his New York apartment on Tuesday.

The cause of his death is unknown after a postmortem proved inconclusive and more tests are being done.

Police believe that he died from a heart attack.

Eric had been jailed and spent time in rehab for his drug addiction.
