Zeta will face stalker in court
By James Langton, Evening Standard
27 July 2004

Catherine Zeta-Jones is to come face-to-face in court with the woman accused of stalking her.

She will give evidence in Los Angeles tomorrow about the threatening letters and phone calls she allegedly received from obsessed Dawnette Knight.

Knight's reign of terror is said to have lasted for more than a year and involved a deluge of hateful letters sent to the star and her Hollywood family.

" Catherine Zeta- Jones will be brought in to testify. She and husband Michael Douglas are scheduled to be in court this week," said deputy district attorney Debra Archuleta at a preliminary hearing in Los Angeles Superior Court.

In court, detectives revealed the offensive and aggressive content in some of the letters for the first time. They included several threats to kill Miss Zeta-Jones, 34, an invitation to her funeral and an accusation that the father of her baby was George Clooney.

Deputy Sheriff Teresa Garrett said when she discussed the case with Miss Zeta-Jones in March the actress was very scared. "She was very upset, lost for words. She didn't know where the threats were coming from," added Ms Garrett. "She was very afraid for herself and her family."

Knight, 32, is charged with 26 crimes ranging from stalking to criminal threats. She was arrested in June after a raid at her Beverly Hills Home and is being held on $1million bail. If convicted she could face up to 19 years behind bars.

Fourteen of the letters being used as evidence in the hearing to decide whether the case should go to trial were sent to the actress's 87-year-old fatherinlaw Kirk Douglas. One, dated 2 January 2003, said: "I hope you know the baby Catherine is carrying is not Michael's. It's George Clooney's - just wait and see in April."

Knight also allegedly sent the family an invitation to their daughter-in-law's funeral, which included the line: "ASAP - Time place, Catholic church, Wales."

In another letter to the Douglas family, dated October 2003, Knight allegedly pretended to be the star's ex-boyfriend John Leslie. "You need to let Catherine know if she hurts Michael I will hire someone to kill her," said the letter. "She will be taken care of ASAP. I know she's filming a new movie called The Terminal. She wouldn't want us to come to the set and f*** her up."

Most of the letters were handwritten except for one, put together from newspaper cuttings. In that note, dated 11 February 2004, Knight posed as John Leslie's then girlfriend Abi Titmuss and addressed the letter from "Abi Leslie". It said: "We will kill Catherine Zeta-Jones soon."

Knight is also accused of making two threatening phone calls in March and April of this year to Michael Douglas's hotel in Bermuda.
