ZETA-JONES STALKER OVERDOSES: Lawyers say Dawnette Knight only “wanted good night sleep.”

(Jul. 30, 2004) *The disturbing case of Dawnette Knight has now become tragic. A preliminary hearing to decide whether she should stand trial for stalking actress Catherine Zeta-Jones and her husband, actor Michael Douglas, was postponed Thursday when she was found slumped on the floor of her jail cell after popping of two sleeping pills on the sneak tip.

Defense attorney Richard Herman said his client was taken to a hospital after being found sleeping on her jail cell floor. She was taken back to jail following her hospital visit.

"She just wanted a good night's sleep," said Herman, who said that Knight had bought the pills in jail. "She just wanted sleeping pills, and these worked real well. Unfortunately, a little too well."

The supposed overdose follows shocking testimony on Wednesday from the celebrity couple, who faced the defendant face to face for the first time and spoke of the grizzly details of Knight’s obsession.

During her more than three hours on the stand, Zeta-Jones said Knight sent her numerous letters containing death threats, including a threat to "slice her up like meat on a bone and feed her to the dogs," as previously reported.

"I've never in my life had anything or had anyone say anything to me so satanic," the Oscar-winning actress testified. "I can't even imagine how a sane human being could have these images locked in their brain."

Superior Court Judge Patricia Schnegg postponed the hearing until Friday at 1:30 pm, saying Dawnette Knight, 32, "appears to still feel the effects" of sleeping pills she had taken.
