ZETA-JONES BLAMED FOR ATTEMPTED SUICIDE

ZETA-JONES BLAMED FOR ATTEMPTED SUICIDE

2004-08-02 : 10:42:09

Catherine Zeta-Jones is being held responsible for ‘driving’ the woman accused of stalking her into a suicide attempt.

Dawnette Knight’s case was suspended after the 32-year-old was reported to have taken an overdose of barbiturates. Knight’s lawyer Richard Herman blames Mz Zeta-Jones and the media for driving his client to attempt to take her life through a “campaign of vilification” and that the real blood is on her hands.

Knight pleaded not guilty to 25 counts of stalking the actress and making criminal threats including sending 19 hostile letters to the Hollywood couple. Superior Court Judge Patricia Schnegg suspended the preliminary hearing for Knight on Friday, ordering the 32-year-old woman to undergo a psychiatric examination to determine if she is competent to stand trial.

“We are going to slice her up like meat on a bone and feed her to the dogs”, read one of the letters written by Knight who had become obsessed with Douglas and was jealous of the Welsh actresses relationship with him.

Prosecutor Debra Archuleta was infuriated by Mr Herman’s allegations: “We are shocked and outraged that the victim in this case, Catherine Zeta-Jones, is being portrayed in this manner,” she fumed, adding, “We believe the statements by the defence counsel to be inappropriate.”

The case will resume on August 16 followed by a full preliminary hearing in September if Knight is deemed mentally stable under American law.

The pint-sized, self-taught Davis became one of America's leading entertainers of the 50s, 60s and 70s. He died from cancer in 1990.

FAHRENHEIT TOO HOT FOR KUWAIT

2004-08-02 : 09:16:42

Kuwait, a significant US ally in the Gulf, has banned Michael Moore's Fahrenheit 9/11 because it claims the film insults the Saudi Arabian royal family and is critical of America’s invasion of Iraq. “We have a law that prohibits insulting friendly nations, and ties between Kuwait and Saudi Arabia are special,” Abdul-Aziz Bou Dastour, cinema and production supervisor at the Information Ministry, told The Associated Press. He added the film “insulted the Saudi royal family by saying they had common interests with the Bush family and that those interests contradicted with the interests of the American people.”
