Dawnette Knight’s case was suspended after the 32-year-old
was reported to have taken an overdose of barbiturates. Knight’s lawyer Richard
Herman blames Mz Zeta-Jones and the media for driving his client to attempt to
take her life through a “campaign of vilification” and that the real blood is on her hands.
Knight pleaded not guilty to 25 counts of stalking the
actress and making criminal threats including sending 19 hostile letters to the
Hollywood couple. Superior Court Judge Patricia Schnegg suspended the preliminary hearing for Knight on Friday, ordering the 32-year-old woman to undergo a psychiatric examination to determine if she is competent to stand trial.
“We are going to slice her up like meat on a bone and feed
her to the dogs”, read one of the letters written by Knight who had become
obsessed with Douglas and was jealous of the Welsh actresses relationship with
Prosecutor Debra Archuleta was infuriated by Mr Herman’s
allegations: “We are shocked and outraged that the victim in this case,
Catherine Zeta-Jones, is being portrayed in this manner,” she fumed, adding, “We
believe the statements by the defence counsel to be inappropriate.”
The case will resume on August 16 followed by a full
preliminary hearing in September if Knight is deemed mentally stable under
