Spielberg and Lucas to headline Deauville festival

PARIS, Aug 4 (AFP) - Directors Steven Spielberg and George Lucas, two of the most powerful men in Hollywood, will be honored next month at the 30th Deauville film festival, the annual showcase for American cinema in France.

French director Claude Lelouch, who introduced Deauville to the world by setting his Oscar-winning film "A Man and a Woman" in the posh Normandy resort town, will head an otherwise all-female jury.

The festival offers an array of little-known independent US features in competition, but also provides a springboard for US blockbusters ahead of their European releases.

As it coincides with the international film festival in Venice, the Deauville event also allows Hollywood's brightest stars to gain a bit of extra publicity for their films without making two trips to Europe.

Spielberg, who will present "The Terminal" in both Venice and Deauville, will be honored at the French festival with screenings of all of his films, including "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" and "Saving Private Ryan".

"The Terminal", which opened in the United States in June and is due to open in France on September 15, is loosely based on the story of an Iranian exile who has lived at Charles de Gaulle airport outside Paris for the past 16 years.

Co-stars Tom Hanks and Catherine Zeta-Jones are expected to attend the festival along with Spielberg to promote the film.

Lucas, who collaborated with Spielberg on the successful "Indiana Jones" trilogy, will be honored with screenings of "Star Wars", "American Graffiti" and a remastered version of his first full-length feature "THX 1138".

Other films to be screened at Deauville include "Catwoman" with Halle Berry, "The Bourne Supremacy" starring Matt Damon, the HBO mini-series adaptation of Tony Kushner's play "Angels in America" and "The Clearing" with Robert Redford.

In commemoration of the 60th anniversary of the D-Day landings, the Deauville festival has scheduled screenings of the mini-series "Band of Brothers", directed by Hanks and produced by Spielberg.

Also to be screened is Robert Harmon's "Ike: Countdown to D-Day", with Tom Selleck starring as General Dwight D. Eisenhower, who commanded allied forces in Europe during World War II.
