*Despite an alleged suicide attempt via sleeping pills, Catherine Zeta-Jones’ stalker Dawnette Knight has been found mentally competent to assist in her own defense following a psychiatric examination ordered by the court.
Knight is accused of stalking and threatening the life of the actress because of an obsession with Zeta-Jones’ husband, actor Michael Douglas. A judge last month suspended criminal proceedings against Knight pending a psych exam to determine whether she was fit to answer the charges following an alleged overdose of sleeping pills.
Knight's defense lawyer Richard Herman told a court Monday that mental health expert Kal Sharma had told him he felt the suspect was mentally competent.
The 33-year-old Knight is now due back at the Mental Health Courthouse on September 8, a week earlier than previously scheduled. On September 9, the hearing to determine if she must stand trial for the charges will resume.
The woman faces a stalking charge and 24 counts of making criminal threats against Zeta-Jones.
