Stalker telephoned Zeta-Jones
Posted Mon, 13 Sep 2004

Telephone bills show that a woman accused of stalking and sending death threats to Catherine Zeta-Jones called the Oscar-winning actress, a detective testified on Friday.

Sheriff's Detective Rodney Wagner told a preliminary hearing at Los Angeles Superior Court that 33-year-old Dawnette Knight's home phone bills showed she had called a hotel where the Welsh actress was staying from her residence in Beverly Hills.

Knight's fingerprints were also found on letters with death threats sent to Zeta-Jones, Wagner said.

A judge is to decide on Monday whether enough evidence exists to send Knight to trial on a charge of stalking and 24 charges of making criminal threats.

The court has already found that she is mentally competent to stand trial.

A court-appointed psychiatrist examined Knight at the request of Judge Patricia Schnegg, who postponed criminal proceedings in July after the defendant tried to commit suicide.

Knight has said she is innocent. But she also apologised to Zeta-Jones and actor Michael Douglas for upsetting them.

Her lawyers have said she is obsessed with Douglas, Zeta-Jones' husband.

"This has affected me and it will affect me the rest of my life. I felt like a ticking time bomb," the 35-year-old Zeta-Jones said in court in July

She said she received threats that she would be killed like assassinated president John F. Kennedy or the murdered wife of former football star OJ Simpson.

Knight is being held in prison because she did not pay $1-million bail.
