Julia's baby in hospital
December 10, 2004

THE glittering Hollywood premiere of Ocean's Twelve was last night marred by news that one of the twins born prematurely to the film's star, Julia Roberts, is seriously ill in intensive care.

While most of the cast of the sequel to the 2001 blockbuster strolled the red carpet at Grauman's Chinese Theatre in Hollywood, Roberts and her husband Danny Moder were keeping a vigil by their young daughter's side in hospital.

The actress is said to be distraught after her daughter Hazel Patricia - who was born weighing just 2kg - was placed in an incubator after suffering breathing problems.

Her son, Phinnaeus Walter, who weighed 2.5kg at birth, is said to be in good health.

The twins arrived five weeks early after Roberts suffered complications in the final stages of her pregnancy.

She and Moder are keeping an around-the-clock vigil at the Cedars Sinai Medical Centre in Los Angeles, where they have remained since the babies were born nearly two weeks ago.

"This is every mother's worst nightmare to have a new baby struggle to survive after being born prematurely," a close friend of Roberts said.

"Hazel has had respiratory problems since birth and was placed in an incubator while her lungs fully develop.

"Doctors have tried to reassure Julia that the chances are good Hazel will be fine and there will be no long-term complications."

But, Roberts is said to be "scared to death" about the immediate future of her child, despite the reassurances of medical experts.

"She and Danny have desperately wanted children for so long and now it is devastating that she can't take her little girl home with her," the friend said.

"With Hazel, all they were able to do for the first few days was look wistfully at her through the glass and hope and pray that everything would be okay.

"Julia had planned to leave the hospital on December 3 but could not leave knowing her baby girl was still so ill."

Doctors became concerned at the end of October when Roberts started having contractions 10 weeks before her due date.

She has remained in hospital ever since but managed to give interviews from her bed to promote Ocean's Twelve, in which she returns to the screen alongside George Clooney and Brad Pitt.

Last night, Clooney was accompanied to the premiere by his model girlfriend Lisa Snowden.

Pitt was also in attendance, along with new recruit Catherine Zeta-Jones and the remainder of the film's stars.

Ocean's Twelve is now showing in cinemas.
