Chala Murari Hollywood

A Subhash K Jha Exclusive

Send to Friend
Send Aishwarya Rai EcardsSo Aishwarya Rai will finally do her first Hollywood film!.. with!. hold your breath!...Michael Douglas!!!!!

Wow, kya baat hai! Highly impressive! or is it? What’s so great about Ms Rai being pitched against Mr Douglas when she has already worked with the mightiest of them all? And I don’t need to say who that is.

Having done more than one with the great Mr Amitabh Bachchan why should we put such a heavy premium on Hollywood specially since most stars from Mumbai who’ve tried to get there have failed miserably?

What’s so hot about being a Hollywood star? Admit it, don’t you prefer our own Amitabh Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai to Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones? I, for one, am spectacularly excited that AB and AR are coming together as a conventional man-woman lead pair in Rituparno Ghosh’s proposed Hindi project with Shabana Azmi playing the wife to AB while Rai will play the Other Woman.

The two came together as father and daughter in Mohabbatein and as siblings in the appalling Hum Kissise Kam Nahin (what a colossal waste of talent the latter was, and trust David Dhawan to fritter away the chance of using a dream team to create a long-running stream).

Download Bride And Prejudice WallpaperAs for Hollywood - hey guys, give it a break, will you? We aren’t wanted there. See how they treated that beautiful little Marathi film Shwaas? It wasn’t because the film lacked any quality (What could it lack, when it has it all, from warmth and wetness?). It was because the Americans just don’t take us seriously.

Or to put it more bluntly – BOLLYWOOD (that awful awful and derogatory term!) JUST DOESN’T EXIST IN THE US. For all they care we could be monkeys hanging from a tree doing our crowd-pleasing tricks.

I don’t know how the American audience is going to react to Bride & Prejudice when it’s released for the Valentine’s week. Ash is flying to the US for the premiere of Bride & Prejudice. From there she flies straight to London to start shooting for The Mistress Of Spices which Gurinder Chadha’s husband Paul Berges is directing.

“Paul is very excited about the film. He has been spending a lot of time with cameraman Santosh Sivan planning his shots and getting the project off the ground,” the proud wife tells me.

But if you ask me about the one project that will take our cinema to the West it will have to be Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s ‘Black’. The film, which opens next Friday, has a unique and distinctive cosmopolitan look to it. Unlike the director’s earlier luminous and lauded epic Devdas which aimed itself at a predominantly Indian sensibility, Black pitches itself straight at the heart where it’s bound to find a huge following.

Send Black EcardsHaving been following Black from the inception I can comfortably say that the film will create a new genre in Indian cinema.

Black has no parallel in anything we’ve seen or heard. I remember I was on the sets of the film late last year. This wasn’t the first time I was watching the great maestro and magician of the movies at work. I had seen him handling Madhuri Dixit and Aishwarya Rai together during Devdas. At that time he had made every shot look like a matter of life and death.

But Black is different. What Sanjay Bhansali created on the sets of Black went beyond life and death. This was a tryst with immortality. I’ve never seen anything like this before in my life. The colour schemes (black and silvery grey) and the level of the performance were higher than anything I had seen in any film.

And now there’s ‘Black’ Friday to look forward to. No I don’t mean Anurag Kashyap‘s film of that title. I’m sure that will have its own merits. But to me - as I am sure it will be for all admirers of SLB’s works - ‘Black’ Friday is Feb 4 when the intricate web of the guru-shishya relationship between the amazing Amitabh Bachchan (by far his best performance to date) and Rani Mukherjee.

Download Black WallpaperCaught up with Jaya Bachchan after a special screening of Black. She was so moved she could barely speak. “I’ve had done a film where I played a deaf and mute, ‘Koshish’. Watching Sanjay’s film has revived memories of that film. I wish Gulzar Bhai would see Black. He’d love it.”

A spectacular premiere of the film is planned for 3 February, a day before the film’s release worldwide. Is Sanjay Bhansali nervous? “Not really. It’s the normal apprehensions. Otherwise I’m fine. Black is very very close to my heart. And right now my heart is brimming over with positive thoughts. There’s no room for anything else.”

And there wouldn’t be room for anything else in the theatres after Feb 4.
