Zeta keeps an eye on her children

Aug 16 2005

Robin Turner, Western Mail

CATHERINE ZETA JONES has revealed she uses a webcam to keep in touch with her five-year-old son Dylan and two-year-old daughter Carys when working on film sets.

The 35-year-old actress has just completed filming the sequel to the box office hit The Mask of Zorro, which was shown on Sunday prime time television. The Legend of Zorro, filmed in the Mexican desert with a budget of more than £60m, is due out in the UK on October 28.

Swansea-born Zeta-Jones explained that the children stayed in Los Angeles while she spent two months filming on the sun- scorched Gogorran Hacienda, a 6,000ft-high cactus-covered plain surrounded by mountains.

She said Dylan was settled in a US playschool where he had friends and it would be wrong to move him.

In an interview, she said, "I never say that I juggle my children and my family for my career because you just don't juggle children and family. For me, the biggest change in my life since I've had children and been married has been to do with scheduling.

"My five-year-old needs to be with children in his playschool and I think it is wrong to take him out. So I'm on my webcam every night. I see them and speak to them at least three times a day. I go back whenever I can.

"I have those few days that are so precious when I'm just a mum and not thinking about anything else. And they come down to see me here. Dylan has play dates with the local children."

The Oscar winner assigned husband Michael Douglas to look after their children while she was away.

She told a London newspaper, "He is such an amazing mum. I couldn't be here without Michael. We always make the pact that if I'm working then he does not and vice-versa."

And when Douglas visits the film set with their children the 60-year-old takes on another role - clearing up after his wife's dog, while Dylan has taken to sword-fighting with his mother and her co-star Antonio Banderas.

She said,"My dog was living on the set and he was poop scooping. I don't think the crew had seen anything like it. Half of them have worked with Michael before and this is not the man they are used to."

After finishing filming in Mexico the couple flew to the UK earlier this month where they spent time with her parents at their new family home in Mumbles.

Catherine also kept up her long running association with the Longfields Centre for adults with learning and other difficulties by visiting its headquarters in West Cross, Swansea. The couple then left for a break in Greece and Spain.
