Disc jockey and Europe team player Chris Evans said the whole team were drinking into the early hours of this morning at the bar while their American rivals were tucked up in bed.

A cross-section of sporting legends, Hollywood film stars and models will be competing over two days beginning tomorrow at the Celtic Manor Resort in the the vale of Usk, south Wales.

Today was a chance for players, which include the likes of Jodie Kidd, The Sixth Sense film star Haley Osment and Steve Redgrave, to practice their shots ahead of the first day of competition tomorrow.

Husband and wife Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta Jones will be also be competing, but on opposing teams captained by golf professionals Colin Montgomerie and Mark O`Meara.

Asked today how his preparation had gone the night before, Chris Evans said: "Too many shots!

"With the greatest respect to our American friends, there were none of them in the entertainment facilities of the hotel after 10pm."

He added: "At about 1.15am, Colin (Montgomerie) looked at me and shook his head because the whole of the European team were in the bar.

"He said to me `Oh well, this is our way and this is how we won the battle of Trafalgar.` The preparation was typically British with a European flavour."

Former Dallas star Patrick Duffy then confirmed the Americans were indeed tucked in bed at 10pm having taken their vitamins.

The bonding session at the bar did not diminish the golfing ability of pop star Ronan Keating who scooped an Audi TT convertible for finishing nearest the pin in a morning competition involving all of the players.

American captain Mark O`Meara said that his team would be taking the tournament seriously.

"It`s friendly but very competitive," said the Ryder cup veteran.

"Everyone is successful in their own right and they are very competitive. The European team is very strong and they are ready to go but we have some fine players as well."

Colin Montgomerie also talked up his team`s chances.
He said: "We are all up for it. You see the team spirit of the European team and we had the inaugural nearest to the pin champion and it was excellent to see. It augurs well for the team."
