DOUGLAS SLAMS UN FOR FAILING TO REACH NUCLEAR AGREEMENT

Oscar-winning actor MICHAEL DOUGLAS has told the United Nations (UN) it should be "completely embarrassed" for failing to reach an agreement on nuclear weapons.

During a visit to the UN in New York City on International Peace Day yesterday (21SEP05), the TRAFFIC star hit out at the organisation for not addressing the nuclear issue at a summit last week (ends16SEP05).

Douglas, who joined UN Secretary General KOFI ANNAN in ringing a 'peace bell' three times, also called on America and other countries to lead the way on nuclear disarmament.

The 60-year-old, married to actress CATHERINE ZETA-JONES, says, "We could not come up with any wording or phrasing regarding the issues of nuclear proliferation.

"Hopefully the silence of that is going to be embarrassing and awkward enough for enough countries to go back and re-evaluate and see if we can't come up with a plan.

"But I personally feel that a lot of this got out of control when we (the US) ignored some basic treaties that have taken years and years to create."
