Golf: Record success for Jones

Oct 7 2005

Western Mail

RICHARD JONES, a cousin of Catherine Zeta Jones, smashed the amateur course record at Pennard in winning the club's monthly medal.

Swansea businessman Jones swept round the challenging links course in 66 - six under the competition scratch score to beat the existing record set by Danny Evans a decade ago by three strokes.

Playing off a handicap of two - now down to one - Jones won the medal's division one top prize and captured the overall award with a nett 64. In fact he won by the proverbial mile, beating nearest rival Phil Littlejohns by six strokes.

Langland Bay have reached the semi-finals of the Mail on Sunday competition and next month will be off to Seville in a bid to take the honours.

They overcame North Berwick 3 -2 in the quarter-finals in Manchester last weekend and are now looking forward to the next hurdle.

Maesteg's Cliff Rees Cup competition was won by Lee Hodgson, who thrashed Lee Griffiths 4&3.

In the north, 13-year-old Callum Jones, who plays off 13, holed in one on the 128-yard 14th using a wedge, while Dave Scott has won two stablefords at Rhos-on-Sea in three days.

He picked up 41 points to win an 18-hole affair and then collected 27 points to take top honours in a 12-hole contest.

Low scoring was the order of the day in the singles front tee medal competition at Clyne as Rob Mackay won by two strokes from Nick Parry and Ian McColl.
