Daniel Craig: Set to be confirmed as the new James Bond

Daniel Craig certainly knows how to leave women shaken and stirred. The 37-year-old actor, set to be unveiled later today as the new James Bond, made headlines just days ago for a reported fling with Sienna Miller as she was getting over her betrayal by fiance Jude Law - one of his close friends.

Last year he enjoyed a romance with supermodel Kate Moss. And former co-star Angelina Jolie has said he is "one of the best kissers" she has ever encountered.

Not bad for a man once nicknamed Mr Potato Head. Landing the role of 007 will catapult Craig into the international A-list.

So far he is best known for his roles in gangster film Layer Cake and starring opposite Angelina Jolie in Lara Croft: Tomb Raider.

Blond-haired, blue-eyed Craig was born in Chester and grew up in Liverpool, the son of a merchant seaman and a schoolteacher. They divorced when he was six and his mother remarried.

As a child he visited Liverpool's Everyman Theatre and became hooked on acting after watching the likes of Julie Walters and Bernard Hill perform.

Aged 16 he moved to London where he performed with the National Youth Theatre before winning a place at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, where his contemporaries included Joseph Fiennes and Ewan McGregor, who was also tipped for the Bond role.

Young Indiana Jones

Among his first roles was a small part opposite Catherine Zeta Jones in the 1992 made-for-video Adventures of Young Indiana Jones. In the same year he made his big screen debut in boxing movie The Power of One.

His breakthrough role came in 1996, playing Geordie Peacock in the acclaimed TV series Our Friends In The North with Christopher Eccleston, Gina McKee and Mark Strong. In 2001 he played Angelina Jolie's romantic interest in Lara Croft: Tomb Raider.

The Hollywood blockbuster was a hit but Craig has said he took the job for the money and is less than proud to have it on his CV.

His other roles include playing the poet Ted Hughes with Gwyneth Paltrow in Sylvia, Francis Bacon's gay lover in Love Is The Devil and Paul Newman's son in Road To Perdition.

In 2003 he raised eyebrows in British film The Mother, in which he had explicit sex scenes with 68-year-old actress Anne Reid.

Craig is notoriously private and hates to talk about his personal life. He married in his early 20s and has a 13-year-old daughter.

After the marriage ended he had a seven-year relationship with German actress Heike Makatsch, who played Alan Rickman's secretary in Love Actually. Last year Kate Moss surprised celebrity-watchers when she began dating him.

He has never spoken about their relationship or his friendship with Sienna Miller, his co-star in Layer Cake.

"I don't want Daniel Craig to be known about. That has got nothing to do with anybody," he has said. But landing the role of 007 looks set to change all that.

Surely if he is a spy, he shouldn't be that recognizable, he is after all, Blonde, James Blonde.

My first choice would have been Clive Owen - that man is a fantastic actor and his looks fit somewhat with the Bond character.

Having read Ian Flemings books, Pierce Brosnan was to me, the perfect Bond. he just fits the physical description best. Too bad they aged him out.

- Jennifer, Michigan, USA

In my opinion, Pierce Brosnan is the only actor who has come even close to the excellent Sean Connery to play James Bond. Mr. Brosnan had that cool, smooth, slim, trim, confident, slightly arrogant look of Sean Connery (as James) who will always be the only true James Bond.
