It seems Mariah Carey is taking her cue from Madonna not in her music, but in her everyday speech. Like Detroit-bred Madge, Mariah has taken a shine to the British accent, and she’s started using it in public in spite of her roots in Lawng Eyeland. Mariah was practicing her Britspeak on Donatella Versace at the Fashion Rocks event in Monaco this week, according to 3 a.m. magazine. Then she told the Daily Mirror, “Dahling, I won’t stop working on my accent until it’s perfect.”

Take a chance on me

And speaking of Madonna, the Queen of Pop had to send a representative to Stockholm recently to petition disco-era sensation ABBA to let her sample one of their songs for her upcoming album. Though she didn’t get an answer straight away, ABBA eventually agreed to let Madonna use part of “Gimme, Gimme, Gimme,” marking the second time in the band’s history that they’ve authorized another artist to use their music or lyrics. Madonna told Altitude magazine, “They could have said no. Thank God they didn’t.”

Calendar girl

Tire makers don’t often have audiences captivated, waiting to see what they’ll release next. But Italian tire company Pirelli, which is largely responsible for the hot-babe calendars hanging in auto body shops across the U.S., consistently has a following leading up to the naming of their cover girl. And for 2006, the famous face belongs to Jennifer Lopez, according to the New York Post. Traditionally the spot is reserved for models such as Kate Moss and Giselle Bundchen, who are sharing the calendar’s glossy pages next year.

A bug’s life

A judge cleared celebrity photographer Jamie Fawcett of planting a bug outside Nicole Kidman’s property in Australia. 25 Hours reports that earlier this year, Fawcett was asked to submit to DNA testing, which he refused, in relation to the alleged incident. That aside, the judge threw the case out of court.

Car trouble

Catherine Zeta-Jones said stories of a near kidnapping in Mexico were “overblown to the point of the ridiculous” when she spoke with a reporter from “Extra.” Though reports claimed that a cadre of armed gang members attempted to hijack her limousine, the actress, who has two children with husband Michael Douglas, said the incident was a standard fender-bender though it didn’t keep Jones’ mother from worrying herself sick. “I had about 50 e-mails and I had to get back to them because they’re concerned for my safety. I am fine, thanks,” she told “Extra. “No spinout, no screeching.”

You’re hired

Brad Pitt didn’t earn a lot of fans by leaving it to ex-wife Jennifer Aniston to officially break the news of his relationship with Angelina Jolie in an interview with “Vanity Fair” and he lost one more after canning an employee for commenting in the article. But, as we’ve come to expect from America’s favorite “Friend,” Jennifer made things right by Kristin Hahn, the former executive for Plan B Productions, the company Pitt and Aniston founded together. After Pitt’s unceremonious dismissal of Hahn, Aniston, who just announced a business partnership with best pal Courtney Cox-Arquette, offered her a new job.
