It's Official: Simpson & Lachey Split
So much for a happy Thanksgiving! Late Wednesday, over-scrutinized Hollywood couple Jessica Simpson
and Nick Lachey
announced, after months of speculation, that they had decided to separate. In what appeared to be an attempt to dodge coverage during the holiday (no such luck, the Today
show was all over the story early Thursday morning), an official statement was issued late Wednesday night, and the couple's press reps were unavailable for further comment on Thanksgiving. The statement, submitted "exclusively" to Us Weekly, read: "After three years of marriage, and careful thought and consideration, we have decided to part ways. This is the mutual decision of two people with an enormous amount of respect and admiration for each other." Wed in October 2002, Simpson and Lachey were a telegenic, publicity-perfect couple, celebrating their love in TV specials and making their private life public in the MTV reality show Newlyweds: Nick & Jessica
, which made both the B-list singers stars and put them permanently in the public eye from its first broadcast. Break-up rumors surfaced aggressively this year, with Us Weekly reporting a split in October, a story the couple fervently denied at the time. --Prepared by IMDb staff
Jolie & Pitt Head to Pakistan for Thanksgiving
Hollywood couple Angelina Jolie
and Brad Pitt
are planning to spend their Thanksgiving weekend visiting earthquake victims in Pakistan. Globe-trotting United Nations goodwill ambassador Jolie is keen to see how the UN High Commissioner for Refugees is taking care of the survivors of the October quake which claimed the lives of 73,000 people - and she's taking her new beau with her. She says, "We'll be on our way to Pakistan in a matter of days." The couple were in Geneva, Switzerland yesterday for private briefings about their low-key trip to the mountainous Kahmiri region of Pakistan.
Winfrey To Appear on Letterman Show
Talk show queen Oprah Winfrey
has agreed to put the past behind her and appear on rival David Letterman
's show. The 51-year-old star accepted Letterman's invitation despite the pair's long running feud which has seen Winfrey used as the butt of many of the The Late Show
host's jokes. Letterman said, "What a big night that is going to be - not only for us, not only for Oprah, but for Broadway." Winfrey's appearance coincides with the opening night of her Broadway musical The Color Purple
. She was nominated for Best Supporting Actress Academy Award in 1986 for her performance in the movie. He added, "She's huge. Put bygones behind us, the water under the bridge, over the dam, wherever water goes - standing in your basement - she's going to be here on this show and it's going to be fantastic."
Clooney Blames Himself for Spine Injury
blames himself for the spinal injury he sustained on the set of his new movie, because he put on so much weight for the role. The actor suffered excruciating pain after tearing his dura - the wrap around his spine that holds in the spinal fluid - after falling off a chair while shooting thriller Syriana
. But Clooney insists he would have spared himself if he'd limited the stress he put on his much heavier body. He says, "I ate myself sick. I put on 30 pounds in 30 days, which really scared me. We shot that scene 20 or 30 times and in one take you actually see the desk go over and my head hit it. I think that was the time it happened. I tore my spine. It was my own fault. I'm 44, not 34, and I was doing all the things I could do when I was 170 pounds, not 207 pounds, so that was a big difference. It wasn't the fault of anybody except myself for not being very smart. I play sports and think I can take it, but I got a good wake-up call. It was dumb on my part."
Cruise & Holmes Wait for Baby Before Making Wedding Plans
Hollywood supercouple Tom Cruise
and Katie Holmes
are planning to wait until their baby is born before they wed in 2006. War of the Worlds
star Cruise tells broadcaster Barbara Walters
in an upcoming TV special that the engaged couple are planning a wedding ceremony for next summer or early autumn, but they're yet to set a date. Cruise has also revealed that he has bought his own sonogram machine so he can follow the baby's progress. He plans to donate the high-tech hospital equipment to an undisclosed maternity ward.
Theron & Townsend Plan Wedding - Sort Of
Hot Hollywood couple Charlize Theron
and Stuart Townsend
are planning to wed the day it becomes legal for gays and lesbians to wed across America. The longtime couple are tired of being asked about their marriage plans so they've come up with a novel line to keep the press happy. Theron tells US news show Extra
, "We came up with a new idea that we said that we would get married the day that gays and lesbians can get married - when that right is given to them. We've decided that we're gonna use that in a positive way, so the day that law gets passed then we'll get married."
Zeta-Jones' Oscar Night Memories Erased
was so overawed by her 2003 Oscar win she had to re-watch the show six months after her triumph just to make sure she wasn't dreaming. The actress was heavily pregnant with baby Cerys when she picked up the Best Supporting Actress for her role in Chicago
and admits that, to this day, the whole event remains one big blur. She says, "It wasn't until six months later that I was sitting at my computer and I looked up at the Oscar on the shelf and thought, 'Oh my God!' I had to re-watch the telecast, because I couldn't even remember what I'd said. I just remember staring at my swelling ankles and thinking, 'I wish I could knock back a bottle of champagne.'"
Miller Challenges Censors Over R-Rated 'Casanova'
has blasted US censors for giving romantic epic Casanova
a restrictive 'R' rating when films that terrify kids get PG-13 releases. Bosses at the Motion Picture Association of America gave the film an 'R' (forbidding people under the age of 17 from viewing it unless accompanied by an adult) because of a banquet scene which hints at Heath Ledger
's Casanova character having illicit oral sex with an underaged admirer. But Miller is appalled by the harsh rating because films that should be given more restrictive releases are passed by the MPAA. She says, "I think it's a pretty harsh restriction when you can go and see terrifying horror films in this country (America). That seems really silly to me. War Of The Worlds
was PG-13 and that was terrifying. I took a nine-year-old to see it and I had to take him out of the theatre because he was terrified."
Klein: "I Hate Fat Girlfriends"
star Chris Klein
has hinted at why Katie Holmes
ended their engagement at the beginning of the year and found love with Tom Cruise
- he has a mean streak. The unforgiving actor tells women's style magazine Elle that he hates placating women and refuses to accept his partner gaining weight because it leads to insecurity issues. He says, "When a woman isn't feeling good about herself and you combine that with her period, eventually she'll ask you if you like her body. You have to say no... I don't placate." He also admits he fell in love with the majority of his female co-stars and counts them all as ones that got away. Klein adds, "I've got this policy that you don't sleep with them (co-stars); it complicates stuff. So it's the Heather Graham
s, the Rebecca Romijn
s, the Mena Suvari
s, and the Leelee Sobieski
s of the world. They all got away." Meanwhile, the actor admits he plans to stay friends with his ex, even though they no longer speak to one another. He states, "Are we friends? Absolutely. Do we talk? No."
Huffman Reveals Eating Disorder Hell
star Felicity Huffman
has revealed she suffered from eating disorders throughout her late teens in a desperate bid to look perfect. The actress admits she eventually called on the help of a family therapist when her weight plunged to just 98 pounds in her early 20s, and she never imagined she'd become one of the sexiest women on TV. She says, "I was bulimic and anorexic for a while, just hating my body. As an actress, I was never thin enough, never pretty enough. My boobs weren't big enough." Huffman credits having two kids and turning 40 for helping her to come to terms with her body at last. She adds, "I think I've always had a 40-year-old body, and now that I'm actually there I'm like, 'Hey, pretty good.'" But the actress insists her past eating disorders and dissatisfactions have had their use - in helping her prepare for acting roles, like in sex-change movie Transamerica
. She explains, "The self-loathing that goes along with bulimia or anorexia helped me understand (character) Bree's internal journey."
Britney & Kevin Are Happy Family for Magazine
and Kevin Federline
are hitting back at reports their one-year marriage is in trouble by posing for their first happy family photo with baby Sean Preston. America's People magazine landed the scoop of the smiling couple, clutching their son, and the picture will appear on the front of the Thanksgiving week edition. It's the first family photo, taken at the couple's home in Malibu, California, of the pop star and her family. In the accompanying interview, Spears talks about her first Thanks giving plans as a mom - the family will watch the famous Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade on TV and then decorate their seaside home for Christmas.
