Professor to be honoured

Dec 2 2005

Robin Turner, Western Mail

BROADCASTER and cultural historian Professor Peter Stead will receive an Honorary Fellowship from Swansea Institute at its HND Awards Ceremony today.

Professor Stead, who will be honoured at the annual ceremony at the Brangwyn Hall for his distinguished career, is the chairman of the Dylan Thomas Literary Prize which is being inaugurated this year. The prize is worth £60,000 and it is being set up with the aim of encouraging writers under 30. It is the brainchild of Professor Stead, who has enlisted Catherine Zeta Jones as "international ambassador" for the award.

Professor Stead believes Swansea's distinguished literary and artistic record has not been given full credit in recent years. He also wants to see a flood of Commonwealth and American scholars and visitors coming to Wales because of the "Thomas connection".

He is currently a Visiting Professor at the University of Glamorgan, having previously lectured in History at the University of Wales, Swansea. He has lived in the United States and been a Visiting Fulbright Fellow.
