The Titanic (DVD)

Tim Curry, Peter Gallagher, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Eva Marie Saint, George C. Scott, Marilu Henner, Barry Pepper

Though it was released a good year before Jim Cameronís uber-budgeted epic, CBSís ďThe TitanicĒ still had itís work cut out for it: We knew that the vessel was one mother of a tug, and thatís got to be one heck of a mission for a filmmaker to recreate. To be truly sucked into the story of the ship, weíve got to believe, weíre there. A couple of hours in photoshop and a foam miniature? Nah, that just simply wonít do.

The modestly budgeted mini-series knows itís got a near non-existent special effects budget Ė and the weak ship mock-up and dimly lit water scenes prove that Ė but it does put itís heart and hardiness into trying to concoct a riveting enough storyline to distract from itís imperfections.

Several fictional and non-fictional characters board The Titanic on its maiden voyage in 1912. Well-to-do Wynn Park (Peter Gallagher) inadvertently bumps into his old-flame Isabella Paradine (Catherine-Zeta Jones) on board, the reprehensible Simon Doonan (Tim Curry) finds a new accomplice to his on-board unlawful activities in a runaway, and Molly Parker (Marilu Henner), well, sheís just as loud, boisterous and as forthright as ever.

Fortunately, this film does tend to turn off and tell other elements of the Titanic story that the other films havenít, for instance : the arrival home.

There are some nice touches in the film, and some very engaging moments, but unfortunately the wonky effects do hinder proceedings quite a bit.

If youíve gotta spend 3-hours watching a movie about the Titanic Ė your best bet is, and will probably always be, James Cameronís Oscar Winning masterpiece Ė but if only out of curiosity, this poor-cousin is still a reasonable watch.
