America's Sweethearts

Billy Crystal, Julia Roberts, John Cusack, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Hank Azaria, Seth Green, Christopher Walken, Stanley Tucci, Alan Arkin, Eric Balfour

It's not that the broth has been spoilt here, it's just that having too many cooks in the kitchen can be a problem sometimes. In the case of this comedy, there isn't enough good jokes to go around, there aren't enough memorable moments to go round et al. So whilst "Americas Sweethearts" isn't a sour offering, it's just a little nutrasweet on the laughs factor. So whilst it could have been an all new take on an interesting concept, it remains generic, when it probably shouldn't have.
Penned by Billy Crystal and directed by Joe Roth, "America's Sweethearts" attempts to spoof the film industry, in particular power couples. (The Tom and Nicole's, the Antonio's et al) and the power-mungers like the late Stanley Kubrick.. And whilst most moments ring true - most people watching won't be phased with it's conception. The 'Sweethearts' are former on and off-screen couple, Eddie Thomas (John Cusack) and Gwen Harrison (Catherine Zeta-Jones), whose passionate love affair has since crumbled and left is a impending divorce settlement to be. When their latest film is no where near finished (thanks to it's Kubrick-like director, played by Christopher Walken) a press-junket is held to cover up for the fact that they won't have a movie to show anyone yet - but they will be reuniting Thomas and Harrison for the event. Here in, lies the task. Re-unite the duo.
Crystal's Lee Phillips checks out Thomas from a rehab centre, whilst Harrison is delicately assisted by her long-time aid and sister, Kiki (Roberts) and together the four off them set out to to the junket. Even before they get there, there is madness - and in typical spoilt-star fashion, plenty of arguments and tantrums. Kiki, predictably, has a special place in her heart for her sister's former hubby, Thomas and hence more madness and jealousy ensues.
Whilst the film does have it's moments, and the ensemble-cast are all in fine form, they just don't have anything much to offer in terms of relating to their audience. Even the idea of spoofing the industry gets bogged down by cliches and backfired gags and the film heads a little downstream towards the end. For what it's worth, it's a good video for the future.
