Michael Douglas: Couples must learn respect

He was once renowned as one of Hollywood's biggest womanisers.

So when Michael Douglas launches an attack on the state of relationships in Tinseltown, is it a case of the pot calling the kettle black or a former heart-throb getting a bit long in the tooth?

The twice-married actor - who raised eyebrows when he married current wife, film star Catherine Zeta Jones, in November 2000 - has made his feelings known about failed showbiz marriages, including those of Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston, and Angelina Jolie and Billy Bob Thornton.

'Why did Brad leave a beautiful woman?'

"I don't know about Brad Pitt leaving that beautiful woman to go and hold orphans for Angelina," said Douglas, 61.

"I mean how long is that going to last? And don't ask me what happened with RenÈe Zellweger [and husband Kenny Chesney].

"I don't know how you get married for four months. And as for Julia [Roberts] with Lyle [Lovett]. There must be some incredible things you find out one night."

Douglas denied ever having treatment for sex addiction and said it was meeting wife Catherine Zeta Jones which curbed his enthusiasm for sleeping around. The pair now have two children -son Dylan and daughter Carys.

'Learn respect'

He told GQ magazine: "You learn to respect something of value and nurture it and treat it well."

He said he remembered his best sex scenes - including with Sharon Stone in Basic Instinct.

"When Sharon and I did the [sex scene] of the century -it was eight days. It was exhausting," he added.

Douglas's new film, The Sentinel, is released later this year.

I agree, also, with the idea of Hollywood marriages being a joke. 50% of ALL marriages in the US don't last, Hollywood or not. But who is Michael Douglas to include the adopted children in his nasty remarks? No class at all. He could take a few lessons from Angelina on using fame and wealth for some good. To each his own, but UGH! And maybe Brad was moved by Angelina's charitable works, as well as her person, and wanted to make his life a little more meaningful. It's got to be more fulfilling than to sit around, primp, and do the "Hollywood" thing.

Holding Orphans? Thats an awful thing to say. Sounds to me like its him thats missing a "Sensitivity Chip."

I agree with MD that relationships (whatever age we are) need respect as well as trust, honesty and of course love!! He has evidently matured and mellowed with age and can now see that respect for one another goes a long way to a loving, stable marriage/relationship. Like the other comments thou - lets hope himself and Catherine are together til death do they part - egg on face springs to mind otherwise!!
