Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta Jones are spearheading a new effort in New York City to raise awareness and funds for landmine clearance. On April 4, they will join Kofi Annan at the United Nation at the first NYC based "Night of a Thousand Dinners" to raise awareness for the cause. Celebrity Chefs Dante Boccuzzi (Aureole), Anita Lo (Annisa), Wayne Nish (March), Francois Payard (Payard) and Cyril Renaud (Fleur De Sel) are preparing the multi-course meal.

According to Adopt-a-Minefield, the United Nations Association of the USA landmine clearance program that is sponsoring the evening, there are between 45 and 50 million landmines in the ground in one-third of the world's nations. Landmines are indiscriminate weapons that maim or kill 15,000 to 20,000 civilians every year. They cost as little as $3 to produce, but as much as $1000 to remove.

This year's dinner, which will coincide with dinners around the globe, is the first major event in New York City, building on the organization's annual event in Los Angeles, which is spearheaded by its goodwill ambassadors Paul McCartney and Heather Mills.

I'm very glad to see they're doing this. Land mines are really evil weapons, killing randomly for decades after their deployment.

See award-winning 'Turtles Can Fly' movie made in Iraq, and emotionally know more about why we should stop landmines. I always wondered if one of the motives for Lady Di's untimely death was her landmine work that stopped the US cold in their planting of those devices all over the world. They were able to start their devil's work after her demise.

Perhaps they should go to Cambodia, and North Vietnam, and tell the Commies to clean up all of their Russian and Chinese landmines.

I've never understood why God fearing, church going Christians can't see how the manufacturing, marketing, promoting and the waging of war making around the globe by the USA (I'm a Veteran) is really not what Jeasus would do.

Make war to defend against invaders from comming into your territory and doing harm to you.

Mexico?

China via Walmart?

Globalization to enrich a handfull of people at the detriment of the entire nations populace?

Hurry, grab another Sony TV!!

Good publicity that only money can buy.

Finally, a movie star gets behind a worthy cause with immediate and measureable results.
