Catherine Zeta-Jones is in final negotiations to co-star opposite Guy Pearce in Death Defying Acts, a biopic of the legendary escapologist Harry Houdini. The Welsh-born actor will play Houdini's psychic lover in what is being described as a lavish period adventure romp.

Death Defying Acts will be directed by Gillian Armstrong from a script by Brian Ward and Tony Grisoni, and is due to shoot in the UK later this year. The film is an independent co-production between BBC Films, the Australian Film Finance Corp and Myriad Pictures.

Zeta-Jones is currently shooting an untitled project for Shine director Scott Hicks. Memento star Guy Pearce most recently appeared on screen in the bloody outback western The Proposition.
