It's kiss and cell time

Now they're sending chapters of romance novels to mobile phones

09:19 AM CDT on Sunday, May 28, 2006

What happened when Lord Rawley's butler announced Amanda? And what did Callie absorb?

You'd know the answers if you subscribed to Harlequin on the Go, a service that delivers serialized romance novels, writing tips, polls and trivia contests on cellphones.

Vocel, a San Diego company that produces applications for cellphones and other wireless devices, has partnered with Toronto-based Harlequin Enterprises Ltd. to provide the service through Verizon Wireless. They plan to offer it soon through other mobile phone companies.

For $2.49 a month, subscribers can download a chapter a day from three different romance novels. They can also download past chapters so they can catch up on previously ripped bodices and rippled muscles.

Among the additional features is "Six Degrees of Kissing," in which users guess which leading lady hooked up with which leading man in a movie. For example, with whom has Catherine Zeta-Jones co-starred: Clint Eastwood or Sean Connery?

(In case you were wondering, Mr. Connery chummed up with Ms. Zeta-Jones in 1999's Entrapment.)

Oh, and it was in The Diamond, when Amanda was announced, "the ballroom turned quiet as a tomb."

And lastly, in The Cop Next Door, "Callie absorbed Ethan's possessive kiss. She wrapped her arms around his daunting shoulders and buried her fingers in the sable waterfall of his hair."

It heats up from there. If you want to know more, check out www.harlequinonthego.com.
